You don’t have to look far to find something picture worthy in India.  From the bizarre, the beautiful, the unique or even the straight out dirty, India becomes a photographer’s (or Instagramer in this matter) paradise.

Below are a collection of Instagrams I snapped over the 5 weeks we were in the country traveling from Kochi to Kolkata. Continue reading »

A quintessential stop on any tour through India, the Taj Mahal is supposed to be all it’s cracked up to be, and for some people, more.  But it’s hard to not have expectations of something so hyped-up and touristy.

As I entered through the red brick gates, I wasn’t overwhelmed with awe or shock, rather, I just felt a sense of calm. “Yup, it looks just as good as the pictures.”

We entered the grounds around 7am and roamed around the area taking photo after photo (I mostly took photo after photo) while trying to stay away from the crowds. When we entered the Taj to see the actual mausoleum, I soon felt anxious and bored.  It was plain compared to the outside, and I felt an urge to get out and see the facade again as soon as possible.  In between photos on the famous bench, (for Simon the Princess Di bench, for me the Oprah bench) we took long pauses to stare at the building as the sun rose  to our right.  I made sure to take a few more photos and give it a few more glances before leaving for good that morning. Usually skipped  by tourists planning to visit Asia, Korea still offers a lot to see and learn for any international visitor.

The food is great and even after two years, I still haven’t tried everything.  Pertaining to culture, Korea’s is pretty interesting, and not an easy one to crack. Being a homogeneous nation for so long makes for a place that is difficult to understand by any outsider.  Additionally, contradictions are visible at every corner– from the 1st grader carrying a smartphone to the old lady selling dried fish and medicinal herbs on the side of the street.  While you can get almost anything you need or want in Seoul, venture outside the city an hour to reach rice paddies and an area where English feels almost non-existent. This week begins a new fun photo series in store for Fridays. The best part is anyone can submit!

The aim is to share unique things that would only happen in a certain country or region.  Some might be funny, while others serious –  the point being to share eccentricities and contrasts about the world around us.

So, for the first edition I’ve chosen one of my favorite shots I snapped during class.

When this student came into class as I was bundled up in my down coat and scarf, not excited about the Korean winter, I nodded and thought “damn right it is kid.”

Only in Korea (and Asia in general) would a child come to school wearing such a sentence on their jacket. With most Koreans having a low level of English,  many of these t-shirts and jackets go unnoticed by the population (and parents!).

It sure is entertaining for the rest of us.

Have a good #OnlyIn photo? Send it my way!

You can submit any photo, from any place, which you think goes well with this theme. It doesn’t have to be for a country, but could fit for a region. For example: “Only in the Midwest” or “Only in Eastern Europe”. I’ll pick the best one to be featured here on Fridays.

Show us what’s unique, special or funny about where you are. Be creative. Don’t be offensive.

How to submit:

  1. Email me at CuriosityTravels@gmail.com with the file attached, or a link to the photo. Please also include a brief description.
  2. You can also tweet your photo to me using @Curiosity_Trvls and #OnlyIn
  3. Or Instagram it my way by using @j_wray and #OnlyIn

Follow all the “#OnlyIn” photos here, or on Twitter and Instagram using the #OnlyIn hashtag.

I usually come back from a night out in Hongdae with three things.  Black feet, an empty wallet and embarrassing memories.  All of these can be attributed to myself, but I usually blame it on wearing sandals in grimy dive bars all night, cheap street cocktails and abundant kebab stands.  (In no particular order).

I have recently experienced a whole new side of Hongdae.  One that I have never walked through, heard of, or would have known about if it wasn’t for my surprise birthday date. Continue reading »

Ever since I switched from my old blog to this site, I’ve gotten serious about social media, consistent blogging, photo editng; the whole lot.  Being on twitter has exposed me to so many amazing travel bloggers and also…travel blogging contests.  One taking over my twitter feed is the Capture the Colour Contest by TravelSupermarket.com.  The prizes are pretty awesome, but for me, my main objective is getting more involved in the travel blogging community. The faces of the Andean Highlands are those of a modern contradiction.   A charming and radiant smile peers through a dirty and fatigued face.  A striking tapestry worn on the shoulders of a woman is as piercing as the look in her eyes, but the tired wrinkles tell another story.   A subtle glance from one culture transfers to another, connecting for one moment, but forgotten the next.
