Having the freedom of your own transportation is a blessing after waiting for trains, taking crowded buses and being ripped off by taxi drivers for days or weeks on end.  But just because you want the freedom of driving yourself around, doesn’t mean you have to  sacrifice your dignity and cause chaos through the streets of Asia.

I hate to call out my gender, but sometimes it’s just necessary.

Dear fellow women, let’s all stop being horrid drivers around SE Asia, it just gives us a bad rap.  Not only is it embarrassing, but it is also really unsafe.  Sadly some of these accidents are deadly every year.  At the same time, don’t be too afraid to rent a motorbike, either.  Take some of the same precautions I’ve learned in the last few years, and be able to ride confidently (or at least fake the confidence) around South East Asia. Today, Jessica from Ways of Wanderers contributes to the “Only In” series.  In 2011, Jessica and her boyfriend decided to quit their jobs, take their savings and buy a one-way ticket to Paris (well, that’s not romantic or anything). Now she currently resides in Thailand, but is about to establish a new home in Japan where Jessica and her boyfriend will be teaching.

Last month, I was contacted by a small, start-up travel app to write something for the blog portion of their website. I was already hoping to do a few guest posts and/or article submissions anyways, so I decided to say yes. To me, Thailand is a place of both dreams and nightmares. You can explore ancient ruins, bathe with elephants, settle on an island paradise.   At the same time, visit a ping-pong show or get a bamboo tattoo on the bottom of your foot and you’ll be haunted with that experience forever (I know personally. Both were painful).

It’s a reason so many people are intrigued by the country. Beauty, horror, chaos; and sometimes the lines are blurred.

Thailand makes another dream reality with the Tiger Kingdom. Yes, you can actually have a tiger cub climb all over you. Continue reading »

I love food, and there aren’t many things I don’t like or won’t try.  I also think one of the best parts about traveling, is eating.   Therefore, to sum up some of my culinary travels I will be starting a series of posts called Five Bites.  Each of these posts will include 5 of my favorite dishes from a particular country or region, along with an occasional recipe.

My first addition to this series is Five Bites: Thailand. Continue reading »
